Blue In Green Gardens
Upper East Side Townhouse

This distinguished single family upper east townhouse garden began as a plot of soggy grass with planter boxes of overgrown shrubs. A drainage problem prevented water from correctly running off, creating a space that could never dry out, resulting in an intense mosquito problem.

Years later, the gardens have undergone extensive renovations.

The back garden has been improved through the use of raised beds, and the grass has since been replaced with elegant bluestone pavers. The new raised beds have since been planted with a mix of evergreen and deciduous shrubs, and low growing perennial and annuals. The addition of large stone focal pots, planted with towering ivy topiaries have defined the space further.

A hot and sunny terrace on the upper level provides the perfect retreat for sunning on chaise lounges, cocktails at sunset or relief under a custom awning.. Climbing roses hug the trellised wall, and a rotating spring bulb and summer annual display keeps this balcony lush throughout the warmest months of the year.

A small private balcony off a bedroom, simply planted with English ivy is a soothing escape from the city street below. Ample room in front of the house provides the perfect location for seasonal displays, whether a spring bulb planting, an autumn cornucopia, or fresh winter greens, berries, wreaths, and garlands for the holidays.
